Let’s go: Memphis Libraries Comic Con!

Let's go to a comic con!

It’s almost here– the inaugural Memphis Libraries Comic Con! I’ve heard good things about other comic events hosted by libraries, and I’m looking forward to being at a comic show that caters to readers! I’m bringing a selection of my Watusi (and other) digests, minicomics, and my full-size comics. It will be a pretty comic-centric selection of merchandise (no prints or original art), but it gives a pretty good sense of the art I make. The convention should be a good time, with two dozen artists, over a dozen dealers, and panels with featured guests Mike Norton and John Ostrander! Admission is FREE, so there’s no reason not to get a taste of the locally-created comic scene …  and the library is even giving free graphic novels to the first 200 attendees, so be sure to make it one of your Free Comic Book Day stops! Hope to see you there!

Hot off the press for Free Comic Book Day 2019: Watusi #39!

It’s been a number of years since I last made a new comic for Free Comic Book Day, the annual day when participating comic book shops across North America give away comic books absolutely FREE to anyone who visits their stores. This year, I’m happy to say, changes that!

Watusi #39 is a special webcomic primer issue; after ten years and a dozen different storylines, a lot of content has accumulated on www.watusithetalkingdog.com, home of my talking dog’s weekly online adventure strip. I figured providing a little guide to all that content would be helpful to acclimate new readers (as well as being a good refresher for long-time readers who only visit the strip from time to time (versus living in it like I do!)) … and this project is what FCBD is all about– sharing good comics with new readers! It’s a 16-page black & white digest w/full-color wraparound cover.

I’ll be distributing copies at Memphis’ own 901 Comics (2162 Young Ave, Memphis, TN 38104) on Saturday, May 4th, FCBD! Can’t make it there? Then it’s still your lucky weekend, because on May 4-5, 2019 you can score a FREE .pdf version of this issue from my online store!

[May 2022 UPDATE: even though FCBD is over, the .pdf version of this issue is still available from my Gumroad store for $2.00; the print edition is available from my Square store (or old school mail order; direct order info on my Contact page) for just $3.00 postpaid in the US.]

Any day is a great day to read comics, but Free Comic Book Day is an especially good one; thanks for making my site one of your stops!

Free Comic Book Day 2016 preview

FCBD2016Free Comic Book Day is coming up this Saturday, and I’m happy to be able to say that I’ll be participating again this year!

Thanks to the networking magic of the Mid-South Cartoonists Association, I’ll be joining MSCA members at Comic Cellar (thanks, Jason!) starting at 10 in the morning to spread the news about our individual comic projects. It will be my first comic-related appearance since I’ve moved to Memphis, and I’m excited to meet some of the comic readers around the area. If you’re out and about, stop in for some free comics (I’m especially interested in those featuring Mooncop, the Phantom (Jim Aparo! Don Newton!), ROM (yes, ROM!) and Spongebob), say hi, and maybe even get a sketch…

It’s Free Comic Book Day 2013!

fcbd13blogFree Comic Book Day, the annual day when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely FREE to anyone who comes into their stores. And, as I’ve done for years, I’m participating with my own FCBD offering!

Free-for-All! #2 is a jointly-produced sampler comic with my friend and KC-based comic artist Mike Sullivan. It showcases our respective weekly online comic projects (Mike’s “There’s Something Happening in Crawford, KS” and my own “Watusi the talking dog”). I’ll be distributing copies at Lawrence’s Astrokitty Comics & More (15 E. 7th St., Lawrence, KS 66044), where I’ll be doing sketches from 2-5; Mike will be doing the same at Pop Culture Comix (9337 W. 87Th Street, Overland Park, KS, 66212). If you’re out and about, stop in and say hi, get some free comics, and maybe even a sketch…

Can’t make it to either of those venues? Then this is your lucky weekend! On May 4th-5th you can take your pick of either of these free downloadable .pdf editions. Just click and enjoy!

  • The printer-friendly version: duplex print your own copy!
  • The e-reader version: direct page reading order for your PC or tablet!

Free-for-All! number 1Free Comic Book Day is coming up this Saturday, and I’ve just finished my item for this year: it’s a jointly-produced comic with my friend and KC-based comic artist Mike Sullivan. Free-for-All! is a sampler of our respective weekly online comic projects (Mike’s “There’s Something Happening in Crawford, KS” and my own “Watusi the talking dog”); while there’s not much in the way of content that our regular audiences haven’t seen already, it will hopefully get our work in front of the eyeballs of some new readers.

I’ll be distributing them at Lawrence’s Astrokitty Comics & More (15 E. 7th St., Lawrence, KS 66044), where I’ll be doing sketches from 11-1; Mike will be doing the same at Pop Culture Comix (9337 W. 87Th Street, Overland Park, KS, 66212). If you’re out and about, stop in and say hi, get some free comics, and maybe even a sketch…

It WAS Free Comic Book Day 2011!

Hope you all had a great Free Comic Book Day! I spent part of last Saturday doing bag sketches at AstroKitty Comics and More; some of them are pictured below. I was most surprised when a boy chose the Marvelman bag over the Shazam! one. I wonder if it was because of Cap’s badly drawn hand…

It’s Free Comic Book Day 2010!

You can get a tabloid-sized dose of talking dog adventures in this year’s Free Comic Book Day offering:

… while [the story]’s nothing new for you long-time followers of the strip, it is a way for me to spread the word about this little venture of mine. If you’d like a copy for your very own, be sure to stop by Astrokitty Comics & More (right here in Lawrence, KS) or Pop Culture Comix (Overland Park, KS) this Saturday (May 1st) and get one while they last! Tell a friend, too — it’s a fun event, and FREE comics can’t be beat!
